Since April 1998 Gustavo Alonso has been Assistant Professor and since October 2001 he has been Full Professor at the Department of Computer Science (D-INFK) at ETH Zurich.
Gustavo Alonso is from Madrid, Spain, where he completed in 1989 his undergraduate studies in Telecommunications Engineering at the Madrid Technical University (UPM-ETSIT). He did his graduate studies in computer science (M.S. 1992, Ph.D. 1994) at the University of California at Santa Barbara. After graduating, he was a visiting scientist in the IBM Almaden Research Laboratory in San Jose, California. He joined ETH in 1995 as a post-doc in the group of Prof. Hans-Jörg Schek before becoming a professor in 1998.
Gustavo Alonso is part of the Institute of Computing Platforms, also known as the Systems Group (https://systems.ethz.ch/) where he leads the Information and Communication Systems Research Group. The research interests of the group include parallel and distributed systems, databases, cloud computing architecture, hardware acceleration, and reconfigurable computing.
Gustavo is a Fellow of the ACM and a Fellow of the IEEE as well as a Distinguished Alumnus of the Department of Computer Science of UC Santa Barbara. His research has received multiple awards, including 4 Test-of-Time or Most Influential Paper Awards in diverse areas: databases, programming languages, cloud computing, and software engineering.
