Best Paper Award for Monica Chiosa and Fabio Maschi

The paper "Hardware Acceleration of Compression and Encryption in SAP HANA" by Monica Chiosa*, Fabio Maschi*, Ingo Müller (Google), Gustavo Alonso, and Norman May (SAP) has received the external page Best Industry Paper Award at external page VLDB 2022.

The paper discusses how to use an FPGA in the I/O path of a database engine (SAP HANA) to accelerate compression as well as encryption/decryption of pages as they are written and read to/from storage. The paper is the result of an ongoing collaboration between the Systems Group and SAP around using FPGAs in database engines. The research was done using equipment generously donated by Intel.
