Green Computing
Overview
The seminar covers recent results in the increasingly important field of computing technologies’ impact on our environment. We will learn the impact of device manufacturing, energy consumption, and the role that workloads have. Most importantly, we will discuss what can be done to address this environmental impact.
The seminar will cover the environmental implications of cloud computing, ML, networking, systems, etc. The seminar should be of special interest to students interested in completing a master thesis or doctoral dissertation in related topics.
The seminar will start on Monday February 17, 2025 with an overview of the general topics and the intended format of the seminar.
We will be doing presentations in groups. You can self-form groups of four. We will then schedule two presentations per class session. Every presentation will involve presenting a full paper and a workshop topic-related paper.
The 40 minute presentation should be divided into roughly four 10 minute sections, each presented by a different student. The roles are (1) the historian who gives relevant background to the paper (2) the full paper presenter who presents the full paper work as their own (3) the workshop paper presenter who presents the work as their own (4) the PhD student who critiques the work and presents ideas for future work (including follow-up work actually proposed) and leads a discussion of the work.
Attendance at the seminar is mandatory to complete the credit requirements. Active participation is also expected and contributing to the questions and discussions of each paper during the seminar.
